TELAY
European Month of Culture 1993, Graz
"Entgrenzte Grenzen II"

A piece of percussion music played by me will be relayed
by telephone to New York and Sydney. From there it will
be reflected by a „telephone mirror“ and thus return to
its point of departure with a time delay.
Signal route no1 right stereo channel:
Graz – Wien – transmission station Aflenz / Antenne l –
Intelsat 605 – transmission station Etam / USA – Nev
York and back again.
Signal route no 2 left stereo channel:
Graz – Wien – transmission station Aflenz / Antenne 3 –
Intelsat 604 – transmission station / Ceduna /
Australien – Sydney and back again.
The time delays incurred via the „upward“ and „downward“
journeys to and from the satellites and via radio waves
and ground cables are the compositional improvisational
media in TELAY. This method of sound reproduction will
result in different qualities being produced depending
on climatic conditions, the length of the telephone
lines and how busy the lines are. This method thus
distance the musician from the direct control of delay
time and delay feedback.
Unpredictable factors and parameters will define the
rhythm and timbre. At the end of the delay sequence, the
concert will directly recorded onto compact disc.
The sound reproductions are a law unto themselves: they
create their own originality.
What is unique can be reproduced.

Ein von mir gespieltes Trommelstück wird nach New York und
Sydney telefoniert, dort von einem ”Telefonspiegel”
reflektiert und kommt so wieder zeitverzögert zu seinem
Ausgangsort zurück.
Signalweg 1 rechts im Stereofeld:
Graz – Wien – Erdefunkstelle Aflenz Antenne l – Intelsat
605 – Erdefunkstelle Etam / USA – Nev York und retour .
Signalweg 2 links im Stereofeld:
Graz – Wien – Erdefunkstelle Aflenz Antenne 3 – Intelsat
604 – Erdefunkstelle Ceduna / Australien – Sydney und
retour.
Die durch die so genannte Aufwärtsstrecke zum Satelliten
und die Abwärtsstrecke vom Satelliten, sowie durch
Richtfunk und terrestrische Leitungen entstandenen
zeitlichen Verzögerungen, sind die kompositorischen und
improvisatorischen Mittel in TELAY.
Solche Reproduktionen (im Sinne von Nachbildung,
Fortpflanzung) weisen je nach Wetterlage, Wegstrecken und
Frequentierung der Telefonleitungen verschiedene
Qualitäten auf, und entziehen somit dem Musiker die
mittelbare Kontrolle von Delaytime und Delayfeedback.
Unvorhersehbare Faktoren und Parameter definieren Rhythmus
und Timbre.
Diese Delayketten enden im Direktmitschnitt des Konzertes
auf Compact Disc.
Die Reproduktion determiniert sich als Original im Unikat.
Das Unikat ist reproduzierbar.
